Immediately after the Chevalier de Bourbon and his friend set forth for their different purposes to the south of the kingdom, Catherine de Medicis began her systematic resolution of ruining the latter in the confidence of her new dupe. A billet, fabricated by her means, was thrown into the window of the ambassador, bidding him caution his countryman, young Willoughby, to discretion—for that, by his idle boasting, the writer of that billet knew he had been four hours in the palace of Westminster on the evening of the 11th of December, accompanied by the Chevalier de Bourbon.
